The U.S. could also use this moment to try to renegotiate a new and better deal with the Philippines — one that meets President Duterte`s goal of being strong against the U.S. and one that gives President Trump the opportunity to put his unique stamp on another important deal, this time a defense deal. this could further U.S. interests for years to come. Paradoxically, the fatal blow for the VFA could come from Washington itself and not from Manila. Asked about his thoughts on Dutertes` denunciation of the deal, Trump replied: "I don`t mind if they want to do it. It will save a lot of money. . My point of view is different from others. Trump`s statement underscores his general lack of esteem for international agreements and alliances in favor of his "America First" policy. If the Philippine government decides to impose the termination of the VFA, it only has to inform the United States in writing of its intention to terminate the contract. The Philippines-United States Visiting Forces Agreement, sometimes also the EU Visiting Forces Agreement, is a bilateral agreement on visiting forces between the Philippines and the United States, consisting of two separate documents.
The first of these documents is usually referred to as "VFA" or "VFA-1" and the second as "VFA-2" or "counter-agreement".  A visiting force agreement is a version of a status of force agreement that applies only to troops temporarily in a country. On February 11, 2020, Philippine President Rodrigo Duterte officially announced at the U.S. Embassy in Manila that he would terminate the pact and that the denunciation would take effect in 180 days, unless otherwise agreed during that period. In the past, Duterte has admired both Russian forces and the Chinese People`s Liberation Army, although the Philippines and China are involved in a dispute over sovereignty over the Spratly Islands in the South China Sea.  In June 2020, the Philippine government reversed this decision and announced the continuation of the agreement.
